Parke County Covered Bridge Bike Tour is always held
on the first Saturday in May and will originate at
Billie Creek Village. The distances are
still being determined as road conditions change.
New staffing and permanent route signage may allow
the addition of more Parke County routes. The
two standard routes are both 25 miles with differing
terrain. A third optional and un patrolled route is
simply a leg added to the south route that adds
about fifteen miles to it. This year
that may change to include SAG attention. We
will update as things progress.
Parke County offers the chance to enjoy the simple pleasure
of dogwood and redbud trees bursting with blooms, as
well as clear streams gurgling through the hills and
miles of scenic countryside toured by bicycles.
Most importantly, the county boasts of 31 Covered
Bridges. More than any other county in the United
States. Parke County is the home of the world-famous
Covered Bridge Festival every October.
The Tour courses range from fairly flat to rolling with several
substantial climbs. The roads are paved with
some areas being recently paved. One
route tours scenic northwestern Parke County
and is a 15-mile level ride for the novice
rider. Another route tours southwestern Parke
County and goes through the village of Bridgeton,
home to the world's newest covered bridge.
An optional leg of this route tours scenic southeastern
Parke County and includes Mansfield.
Another route takes the rider from Billie Creek
Village to the Nattows covered bridge located at the
eastern edge of Turkey Run State Park Riders are welcome to ride
any or all of the routes. Each of the
routes either crosses or passes several of Parke
County's famous covered bridges on county roads.
Single file traffic is recommend for your safety and
there will be rest stops and SAG vehicles are
available on all routes.
The Tour will start at 8:00 a.m. although riders may start at their
leisure. The SAG vehicles and rest stops will run
between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
A portion of each registration fee will be donated
to the Billie Creek Village Fund and the Indiana
Bicycle Coalition, Inc.
